CDL Fees in Virginia

Before you can do anything, you need to apply for an instruction permit. This will allow you to practice behind the wheel of a truck. It will cost you $3 to get your permit. Following that, you’ll need to take a knowledge test that is administered either written or verbally, and take a vision test. After that, you need to take the skills test which is also known as the road test.

The way fees are determined in Virginia is slightly confusing but please bear with us. A Virginia CDL costs $8 a year that it is set to be valid. There is a $20 minimum for the license. Then you need to add $1 per year per endorsement. The total license fee is based on the number of years it remains good before it needs to be renewed. Typically, a Virginia CDL is good for eight years. So, a basic CDL would cost $64. If you need to get an endorsement like the HAZMAT, it will need to be renewed every five years so your licensing fees will differ. You pay these fees after you’ve passed the road test.

If you want a HAZMAT endorsement, you need to complete a background check and fingerprinting. Virginia offers this at some DMVs in the state and the fee is $83.
